THE UPSIDES

Start time: 08:00 PM

The Upsides are a four-piece rock act making a unique brand of thoughtful indie rock in New York City.

The group consists of brothers Matt Fullam (guitars and vocals) and Dan Fullam (drums) with longtime friends Matt DaSilva (bass) and Hart Mechlin (guitar). Sonically, the group blends the energetic, guitar-driven work of the Strokes with early ‘70s Heartbreakers tones. Drums and bass incorporate uptempo, danceable grooves that are reminiscent of the early aughts rock revival in the group’s home city, while Matt Fullam’s vocals center the music in both the live and studio settings. He effortlessly flips from a croon to a falsetto to match the band behind him, whether bringing life to downtempo grooves à la The Rolling Stones’ “Angie” or electrifying the audience with overdriven, Queens-of-the Stone Age-esque tenacity.

The band’s second EP , Undercover Retro, follows on the heels of their debut record, Patterns. Both showcase clever riffs, thoughtful lyrics, and a diverse yet succinct palette of the group’s influences. Undercover Retro’s title track is a straight out, 70s-inspired groove, highlighted by a head-bobbing bass lick delivered by world-renowned bassist Ken Rich. The group’s bread and butter, though, is guitar sounds, with a range of palettes that reflect everything from Nick-Valensi esque guitar licks to Nile Rogers on Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, all while maintaining an identifiable thread. Recorded at Grand Street Recording in Brooklyn, NY, the blend of vintage instruments with engineer Jake Lummus’s modern mixing prowess results in a sound that is instantly big and accessible, yet unique and timeless. An energetic and engaging live act, The Upsides debuted new material at New York’s famed Mercury Lounge in September 2021 and played an October 2021 show around the corner at Arlene’s Grocery. Debut single “Gold Rush” was supported by a release show at The Bowery Electric.
