The Maxell 90 is a four-piece band of Triangle music veterans that began in 2022 as a one-off celebration of the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.'s Chronic Town. While friends of the group joined the big anniversary festivities in Athens, Georgia, the band felt North Carolina deserved a tribute of its own, given R.E.M.'s close ties to the state. After all, Chronic Town and the band's first two albums were recorded here.
The response was so strong that the shows kept coming. The Maxell 90 has now played more than ten tribute performances across Durham, Raleigh, Charlotte, Hillsborough, and Duke University. No two shows are alike: the core band is joined each time by guest vocalists drawn from the region's finest. This year, the band marks the 40th anniversary of Document and the rarities collection Dead Letter Office, while, as always, honoring the full breadth of R.E.M.'s catalog.
The band:
Scott Carle (Dillon Fence)
Tom Mills (Johnny Folsom 4)
Alex Lawhon (The Roman Spring)
Andrew Branan (Cage Bird Fancier)
Featuring:
Matt Peterson, (Canine Heart Sounds, Keyboards)
Mike Ivanitch, (The Mad Starlings/Percussion)
